识字班 Foundational Literacy Class for K2 to P2 Students

Achieve a higher Chinese reading and writing age than your child’s current age!

Many students lack the fundamental knowledge of 汉字 and find it extremely difficult to progress their Chinese learning in Upper Primary as they do not have knowledge of basic characters/words. This will only result in the snowball of undesirable grades and the lack of confidence or motivation to study Chinese.

Laying a solid foundation in Chinese from a young age is ideal for your child to have the essential stepping stones required for success. Being equipped with basic building blocks of Chinese reading, writing, understanding and application skills, it can prepare them for more complex curriculums in Upper Primary, where they will be more likely to ace the Chinese exams.

At XueLin, our proven learning process will develop your child’s Chinese language abilities through a fun and goal-driven curriculum. From week-on-week improvements to achieving the important learning outcomes, we will help your child progress academically and gain a genuine interest towards this challenging subject.

Our 5 Steps Literacy Learning Process

No. 1

Recognise - The most effective way to help students remember Chinese characters is through great storytelling and visuals. Our experienced teachers will teach:

The origin of the different Chinese characters and how they have evolved into modern characters through pictorial depiction.

The 3 main formations of Chinese characters

(i) Top to bottom - 家, 虎,条,府

(ii) Left to right - 吃, 妈,他, 辣

(iii) Simple - 人, 山, 水, 大

In addition, we also make use of flashcards and fun activities to engage students in a more interactive way through active recall and repeating the act of learning.

天 (tiān) ‘heaven’

For example, the word 天 is the exact character of 大 with just an additional line stroke. This refers to the things that are above human beings.

No. 2

Understand - The next checkpoint to look at is the understanding of the Chinese characters and knowing the meanings of words and phrases based on context. With a basic contextual understanding, it can accelerate learning in the next step of reading and writing as your child will be equipped to make connections between different characters and develop an innate ability to retain information better.

The word ‘女’ is an independent character that refers to a female. When combined with other components, it can form characters such as ‘妈’,‘姐’ and ’妹‘ , who are all females in nature.

This intricacy when it comes to learning Chinese is highly emphasized on in our curriculum.

Example #1:  天天天晴

When broken down into ‘天天’ and ‘天晴’, students will learn that the character 天 has very different meanings in these two parts.

天天 = Everyday

天晴 = Sunny

天天天晴 = It is sunny everyday.

Example #2: 海上 vs 上海

Placement of two simple characters ‘海’ (sea) and ‘上’ (up)  plays a huge role in the contextual meanings of the words formed.

海上 = Above the sea

上海 = Shanghai (a city in China)

No. 3

Read - Since Chinese is a tonal language, pronunciation is key. By mastering Hanyu Pinyin, students will be able to have a good grasp of the different tones and improve their mandarin speaking capabilities. Your child will be able to read independently in no time!

No. 4

Write - The art of Chinese writing lies in the 7 basic rules of stroke order. Remembering the correct steps of the strokes is critical as it will help you to write efficiently and clearly.

Our in-house designed worksheets are created in a way to help students learn Chinese character writing easily and with practice overtime, it focuses their brains to process the knowledge in a more detailed way and successfully store it in their long term memory bank.

We also strongly emphasize on penmanship (方块字) and encourage all students to write each character in a proportionate ratio.

For example, a Right ⅓ - Left ⅔ ratio is used for this character 语. This 1:2 ratio is used when there are more strokes on the left than on the right.

No. 5

Apply - As the final step of the learning process, we will be introducing Chinese sentence structures to expose the students to the essential qualities of Chinese grammar and build up their confidence in Chinese learning. Students will learn how to construct simple sentences, express themselves in Mandarin and nail the basics in both writing and conversational Chinese.

These foundational Chinese literacy skills will be built upon to give your child the confidence to excel in Listening Comprehension, Composition Writing and Oral exams during the later stages of their education.
